Cheap VPS hosting: what $5 actually buys
The short version
Cheap VPS hosting is three different products. A $2 promo KVM box is a toy if you want WooCommerce. A 2–4 GB KVM can hold a small WordPress site if you will SSH. A managed panel (Hostinger VPS or Cloudways) is what you buy when you will not. RackNerd’s public homepage still says from $2.24/mo. Hostinger KVM 1 is still $6.49/mo intro, renewing at $11.99/mo for 2 years. Promos move; open the live page before you pay.
Three buckets, not a trophy list
Search “cheap VPS hosting” or “best cheap VPS” and every affiliate list ranks by sticker price. That ranking is how you land a 1 GB node, turn on WordPress plus a page builder, and watch the box swap itself to death. Split the job first.

The 1 GB bucket fails for a store because of the memory map, not because a CPU graph looks idle. A typical Ubuntu image plus nginx, PHP-FPM, and MariaDB already occupies most of that gigabyte at rest. WordPress, a page builder, object cache, and a handful of concurrent PHP workers then force the kernel into swap. That is why a $2 WooCommerce plan dies while “CPU usage” still looks low. We are describing what those processes need, not an uptime score from a RackNerd or Hostinger node we provisioned.
2 GB is the first size where MySQL can keep a small InnoDB buffer and PHP-FPM can run more than one worker without immediately swapping. It still assumes you will SSH: unattended package updates, a firewall, and not stacking staging plus production on the same box. 4 GB — or a managed panel on top of someone else’s VPS — is the first bucket that matches WooCommerce plus a page builder on paper. Hostinger KVM 1’s 4 GB is in that third bucket even when the intro sticker is still “cheap.” Cloudways is not a VPS SKU at all; it is a control panel on DigitalOcean, Vultr, or similar. You pay so you do not patch PHP.
A delayed fetch of the public pages on 16 September 2026 confirmed the two affiliate stickers: RackNerd homepage still says from $2.24/mo, and Hostinger’s KVM 1 card still lists $6.49/mo intro / $11.99/mo renew on a 2-year term, 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe. Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean Droplets still did not give a clean monthly table in the HTML we saved, so we are not inventing a euro or a Droplet dollar. The RAM buckets do not depend on those stickers.
Sticker prices we have on file
Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean Droplets are the non-affiliate check. The HTML we saved on 16 September 2026 still did not expose a clean monthly cell we could quote, so we are not pasting a euro or a Droplet dollar. Open hetzner.com/cloud and digitalocean.com/pricing/droplets and compare RAM per month against the $2 US promo. Those two usually win on “will this still exist in 12 months” even when they lose on the landing-page price. We do not have an affiliate cookie on either. Hostinger KVM 2 on the same 16 September card is $8.99/mo intro / $14.99/mo renew (2 years), 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM.
Promo, oversell, refund
- Year-two price. Hostinger’s intro $6.49 vs $11.99 renew (2-year term on the card we loaded) is the honest number. RackNerd’s $2.24 line is still a “starting at” promo. Budget the renew, not the banner.
- Oversell. A $2 US reseller node is often many tenants on one hypervisor. A Hetzner/DO shared-vCPU instance is still shared, but the public catalog is stabler than a rotating coupon page. We did not measure noisy-neighbor CPU. The tell is still: if the RAM is 1 GB and the screenshot shows “unlimited,” walk away for WordPress.
- Disk. Prefer NVMe KVM over unspecified HDD. Hostinger’s KVM 1 card still lists 50 GB NVMe. If a $2 plan does not name the disk, treat it as unknown, not “fast.”
- Refund window. Hostinger’s VPS page still shows a 30-day money-back guarantee. We did not re-read RackNerd’s TOS today, so we are not quoting a day count for that promo.

What is the cheapest VPS hosting?
Among pages we captured, RackNerd’s KVM promo from $2.24/mo is the lowest sticker. That is not the same as the cheapest usable WordPress host. Hostinger VPS intro $6.49/mo ($11.99 renew) is the first SKU here with 4 GB RAM on the June sheet.
Can a cheap VPS run WordPress?
A 2 GB KVM can run a small blog if you update it. A 1 GB promo box plus WooCommerce is how these threads end. We did not boot WordPress on these plans for this page.
Raw VPS or managed?
Raw (RackNerd, Hetzner, DigitalOcean) if you will SSH. Managed (Cloudways, or Hostinger’s panel) if you will not. The cheap-VPS query mixes both; pick the bucket first.
