Ahrefs vs Semrush: two meters, not one price

Ahrefs vs Semrush is the comparison Google already sends here. The same query written the other way — semrush vs ahrefs — is the same job: pick a seat or walk away. Most write-ups reprint the same feature grid. The part that actually changes the bill is Ahrefs running two meters — report credits and crawl credits — while Semrush Pro still sells a seat with plan caps, not a click counter. That is the decision, not “which logo looks more SEO.”

What the public pages say today

  • Semrush Pro still shows $139/mo, or $117.33/mo on annual, with a 7-day trial on Pro/Guru.
  • Ahrefs Lite is $129/mo on the public pricing page: 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits, 500 credits per user.
  • Ahrefs help: opening a report costs 1 credit; applying filters or opening SERP/history costs another. Site Audit and Rank Tracker do not spend those report credits.
  • If you only need SERP snapshots or ranked-keyword pulls, a pay-as-you-go data API is cheaper than either seat. A $129/mo Lite plan is the wrong product for 20 lookups a month.

The credit math most comparison tables flatten

Ahrefs lists two pools on Lite. Crawl credits (100,000/mo) feed Site Audit. Report credits (500 per user on the pricing table we loaded today) feed Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Content Explorer, and similar. Ahrefs’ own help article “What actions consume credits” is blunt: one credit per report you open, plus one more when you filter, change dates, or open the SERP viewer.

So a single competitor pass — open Site Explorer, filter dofollow, open Top pages, open Organic keywords, peek at one SERP — is five credits on one domain, before you export anything. 500 credits is 500 of those actions, not 500 domains. We are quoting the help article, not a stopwatch from our login. We did not sit in Lite for a week. If Ahrefs later changes the extra-credit rule for filters, that five-credit walk-through is stale the same day. Re-read the help article before you treat 500 credits as 500 domains.

Semrush Pro does not sell that click meter. It caps tracked keywords (500 on Pro), projects (5), and audit pages per crawl. Heavy daily research still hits those walls. It does not nick you for opening the same competitor report twice in an afternoon.

If that afternoon is your job, Lite’s sticker ($129) is not the cost. The cost is Lite plus the Standard jump ($249) the first month the 500-credit pool runs out. Standard lists unlimited credits per user on the same pricing page.

When you should not buy either seat

You do not need Semrush or Ahrefs to answer “what does this keyword’s SERP look like this week.” Pay-as-you-go APIs (DataForSEO is the one we use on this desk) charge per SERP or per ranked-keyword pull. That is the honest third column in an Ahrefs vs Semrush table, and the vendor blogs never add it because they are selling a login.

Buy a seat when you live in the UI: rank tracking every week, link prospecting, content briefs, client reports. Buy API calls when you need a snapshot. Mixing those jobs is how freelancers leak $129/mo for a tool they open on Mondays.

ToolBistro last opened both public pricing pages on 16 September 2026. We still have no product login for this pair, so we are not scoring “backlink freshness” or “volume accuracy.” Those claims in older roundups are usually unsourced. If a vendor has not published a method, we will not invent one.

Seat math, using the public extras: one Ahrefs Lite user is $129; a second is $40 more ($169). One Semrush Pro user is $139 monthly or $117.33 annual; a second was $29 more on the June Pro table. Three people on Lite is $209/mo before anyone burns credits. Three people on Pro annual is $175-ish if that extra-user line still holds — confirm on the live page, because seat add-ons move. The credit meter is still the larger surprise.

Who the public limits actually fit

  • Semrush Pro if you want one login for keyword research, site audit, and a 7-day trial, and you can live with 500 tracked keywords. Extra users are $29/mo on Pro per the June table; re-check the live pricing page before you hire the second seat.
  • Ahrefs Lite if backlinks are the job and you will stay inside 500 report credits. Link prospecting that opens Content Explorer is a Standard feature in several 2026 plan write-ups; confirm on ahrefs.com/pricing, because Lite’s public grid is Site Explorer / Keywords Explorer first.
  • Neither if you need twenty SERPs and a backlink count for one client this month. That is API work.

FAQ

Is Semrush cheaper than Ahrefs?

On the entry seat, Semrush Pro annual ($117.33/mo) undercuts Ahrefs Lite monthly ($129). Once you add Ahrefs seats at $40 each, or you burn Lite credits and step to Standard at $249, Semrush’s all-in number is often lower. That is arithmetic from the public tables, not a coupon we ran.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

The pricing page we loaded on 16 September 2026 does not advertise one. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools still gives verified site owners a free slice of Site Explorer and Site Audit. Semrush still advertises a 7-day trial on Pro and Guru.

What actually eats Ahrefs credits?

Report credits: opening Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, and similar reports (1 credit), plus extra credits for filters, date changes, and the SERP viewer. Crawl credits: Site Audit. Rank Tracker is on its own keyword cap. Source: Ahrefs help, “What actions consume credits.”
